Healthy Living Corner
I'm continuing to read Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD, with Bill Gifford. This month’s reading is from chapter 8, "Runaway Cells," which explores new ways to understand and address cancer.
One of the biggest lessons I took away is that cancer is often a disease that develops over many years. Dr. Attia explains that our bodies regularly produce abnormal cells, but in many cases, our immune system identifies and removes them before they become a problem. Cancer develops when some of those cells escape the body's normal defenses and continue to grow.
Dr. Attia reminds us that many of the choices we make every day can have a lasting impact on our heart health, including: Staying physically active, eating a heart-healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure, getting quality sleep, reducing stress and avoiding tobacco products. My biggest takeaway from this chapter is that we shouldn’t wait until something is wrong before taking care of our hearts.
As always, I'm sharing what I'm learning on my personal health journey—not offering medical advice. I encourage everyone to do their own research and discuss any health concerns or screening recommendations with their healthcare provider.
