Every July, my family gathers for our annual family reunion—this year marked around our 41st year! We typically return to our roots in North Carolina, where many of my family members still live. I flew in early, arriving at 4:30 a.m. on a Wednesday, one week before the festivities began.
The air was thick and damp from recent rains, and parts of the Durham area had even experienced flooding. It rained each day for five days straight! But as the reunion kicked off, the skies cleared, and the sun took center stage with 90+ degree days. Everyone else complained about the heat, but I welcomed it! You see, I remember working those hot summer days in the tobacco fields—so now, I appreciate just sitting on the screened-in porch, feeling a light breeze, and reminiscing with family.
This year’s reunion theme was “Boots on the Ground.” I may not know the dance, but I wore the perfect outfit and brought my fan—because if you know, you know: "Where Them Fans At!"

Now I’m back in Oakland, where today’s high is between 67 & 72 degrees. 🙁 If I didn’t have to work, I’d fly right back for another week of heat and porch time. But I guess I’ll have to wait for our September Summer experience, which are warmer days here.

Even though I was in NC for 2 weeks, I continued to eat as heathy as I could. I went to the grocery store, purchased vegetables for my salads. When we went out to eat, I focused on eating veggies and baked or broiled meets. Although, I had to have me some good old southern fried chicken 😊.
